HONORS EXPERIENCES

Experience #1: UHP First Year Welcome Experience Mentor

Summer/Fall 2022:

I have been serving as a first-year Welcome Experience Mentor for the University Honors Program! What this means: I have been attending monthly meetings to learn more about DEI topics, working with others, and how to mentor a group! My co-mentor, Brooke and I have a group of four students, and we have held multiple mentorship meetings with them. We have provided advice on classes to take, places to live, food to eat, and even just how to navigate friendships within these tough first few years of college. All of our group members are women in STEM majors, so I feel as if this has been extremely beneficial for all of us to be able to learn from each other. I feel like we all empowered each other throughout our meetings and our freshman learned a lot from us. They seemed to really confide in Brooke and I! As well, at the retreat, our group was called the STEMinists, and we won! It made me happy that everyone was able to take pride in our identities. For me, it was especially important as one of the freshman was a CS major, just like me. I loved being able to help her along and watch her thrive.

Blog entries:

August 17th: Today was UHP Mentor day. We met our group and brought them to different activities, info sessions and student panels. I loved meeting everyone and learning about their majors, and where they are from! All of the girls seemed super excited, and I was especially happy because there is a female CS major in my group!

August 31st: Today was our first meeting. We got to hear about everyone's first week of school as well as how Brooke's co-op was going. Everyone seemed still super happy and excited which is always good!!

October 13th: Today was our second meeting. It was a little difficult trying to get everyone's schedules together, but we finally made it work. Brooke showed us a small demo at co-op, and we checked in with everyone on how classes were going. ENED robots, apartments for next year, and midterms were the main topic of conversation!

October 19th: Today was our last meeting! It was sad to see everyone go, but exciting as they all seemed still super excited and happy about school. We answered questions about finals week, ENED 2, and chem lab final.

Experience #2: UHP Student Leader Round Table

Experience #3: UHP Ambassadors Leadership Team

Fall 2022:  I have been participating in the Student Leader Round Table for this fall semester! We are a group of ten students who has been meeting about bi weekly on Fridays, from three to four. Each week, apart from the first and last meetings, a small group of students presented on different topics. These topics are outline below in my meeting reflections. Overall, I feel as if I learned a lot throughout this experience. I came in representing Exec on ACM-W, but I just accepted an Exec position in my social sorority, Kappa Alpha Theta! I was exposed to so many good resources that I will definitely be using in the future, and I will definitely make sure to use in my new exec role. One of my personal goals for this next year is to become a more outgoing leader, and this is especially important in Theta because this is how your voice will be heard. When facing challenges, it is important to remember who you can lean on, such as the president of the org or a past member who was in your position before. I think I will know that I did a good job when I feel like I have personally grown.

Summer 2023:

Although this UHP Experience has yet to fully begin, I have become very excited for it! Leading the UHP Ambassadors has been a thought in my mind since before I became an ambassador. I hope to be able to provide positive change to the program. I am on the Community Development and Outreach Committee.
